The future Pope Francis took charge of doing the laundry

APTOPIX Italy Pope Epiphany

The following are excerpts of the religious blog of Chris Lowney in CNN. He is a former Jesuit seminarian and at one time served as managing director of JP Morgan & Co. He is the author of the book “Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads.”

“Every day, millions of Americans perform a task that epitomizes Pope Francis’ leadership style: They do the laundry. I came to that somewhat surprising conclusion while talking to Jesuit priests who lived with the future Pope, then known as the Rev. Jorge Bergoglio, during the early 1980s. At the time, they were young Jesuit seminarians, and he was their “boss,” the rector of their 100-member community…

“But when I asked these Jesuits what they learned from Bergoglio about being a good leader, the first memory they shared wasn’t a memorable speech or policy initiative. Instead, they recalled Bergoglio doing the laundry. Bergoglio used to stress that the seminarians were a family, and each person had to do his share of the chores to support the other family members.

“Even though Bergoglio was their superior and carried a heavy administrative and teaching load, he also chipped in, taking the role of community laundry man. Any seminarians awake at 5:30 in the morning could find him down in the basement, pitching bales of laundry into balky, 1980s-style industrial washing machines.”

Let us learn from this example in our following Jesus, who is meek and humble of heart. Let us emulate too the lowliness of Mary, handmaid of the Lord.

Is this Mother Teresa at age 18?

Mother Teresa at age 18

Oh look, no wrinkles. Historical Pics, a site linked to Twitter, says that this is the picture of Mother Teresa at 18 years old. Historical Pics shows the photos of other famous people in their youth, like Queen Elizabeth, Audrey Hepburn, and Judy Garland. We’re not certain this is indeed Mother Teresa’s photo. But we’re sure she is now far more radiant and lovely than many citizens of the Kingdom of God. Not our regular fare, but well, it’s a great picture. Now back to regular programming.

Take courage in the rough seas of life.

Christ walking on the water

We place our confidence on Jesus who calms the storm and walks on the waves.  We seek comfort from Our Lady who listens to our cries.

This is a message of the Virgin Mary from apparitions at Quito, Ecuador, 1599:

“When tribulations of spirit and sufferings of the body oppress them and they seem to be drowning in this bottomless sea, let them gaze at my holy image and I will always be there ready to listen to their cries and soothe their pain.  Tell them that they should always run to their Mother with confidence and love.”

The light of Christ comes to the nations

Three Kings

The Epiphany of Christ to the Magi foreshadows the light He will bring to all nations. Jesus then sends the Spirit into the world. The role of the Spirit is highlighted in messages from Mary, the Lady of All Nations, given at Amsterdam, 1951. These apparitions have been officially approved.

“Smiling, the Lady adds, `These three rays are Grace, Redemption, and Peace. Through the grace of my Lord and Master, and for the love of mankind, the Father sent His only-begotten Son as Redeemer for the world. Now They both wish to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, Who alone can bring peace. Hence, ‘ Grace, Redemption, and Peace.’”

“I must protect my children.”

“ `I must tell my children.  I must warn my children. I must protect my children’.  These are a mother’s thoughts when she learns of dangers…Like a mother, all I can say is, `Stay close to me.   The forces are too complex for me to give you directions.  But if you stay with me, I will keep you safe.  Now is not the time to wander.  Do not set aside the graces I give you today.’”

Revelation of Jesus to the Polish nun Saint Faustina Kowalska:

“[Let] the greatest sinners place their trust in My mercy.  They have the right before others to confidence in the abyss of My mercy.”

“I cannot punish even the most hardened sinner, if he appeals to My Mercy. He is immediately granted pardon through my incomprehensible and unfathomable Mercy.”

-o0o-

“Write, speak of My Mercy.  Tell souls where they are to look for solace, that is, in the Tribunal of Mercy (editor: confession).  There the greatest miracles take place [and] are incessantly repeated…It suffices to come with faith to the feet of My representative and to reveal to him one’s misery, and the miracle of Divine Mercy will be fully demonstrated.”
